Main purpose of job

  • To support management in all aspects of the home’s care service, including taking temporary charge of the home in the absence of the person in charge.

Main responsibilities

  • To work flexibly on a Rota system as allocated, to provide a comprehensive round the clock service to Patrons.
  • To cover for absent or sick colleagues as requested.
  • To keep up-to-date with the home’s policies and procedures, and relevant legislation and environmental health issues.
  • To assess new Team Members’ competence to carry out duties expected of their role.
  • To assist with training Junior Team Members in all aspects of their work, including Health & Safety awareness.
  • To carry out supervisions and appraisals for Junior Team Members.
  • To attend all mandatory and good practice training organised by management.

Main duties

  • At the start of each shift, read the Communication Book for an update on what is happening in the home, and share appropriate information with other members of staff.
  • Allocate and coordinate team duties, ensuring all work is completed efficiently and to a high standard.
  • Assist Patrons who need help with personal hygiene and dressing etc, showing respect, dignity and compassion.
  • Carry out hourly head counts.
  • Answer the nurse call, door and telephone promptly, courteously and efficiently.
  • Administer medication as directed by Deputy Manager.  Carry out monthly medication audit.
  • Arrange and coordinate Patrons’ outpatient appointments and transport.
  • Liaise with visiting agencies such as GP, District Nurse, CPN, dentist, optician, foot care practitioner and physiotherapist.
  • Keep Patrons’ care plans updated, acting as a keyworker for name Patrons.  Electronically document care given, using QR codes, to keep an accurate record of Patrons’ wellbeing.
  • Ensure beds are changed as often as necessary, rooms and ensuites are clean and tidy and toilets sanitised after every use.
  • Report breakages/damage to Patrons’ personal items, company property and equipment as well as maintenance issues to management.
  • Inspect the laundry daily. Ensure Patrons’ clothing is laundered to a high standard and returned to the correct rooms. Any unlabelled items to be marked.
  • Assist Patrons with impaired mobility and other physical disabilities, including incontinence.  Help them to use aids and equipment and oversee Team Members in doing so.
  • Check the dining area before each meal to ensure tables are correctly and attractively laid with linen, cutlery and condiments.
  • Promote Patrons’ mental and physical wellbeing, encouraging them to take part in organised activities where possible.  Work with Patrons on an individual level, e.g. by reading to them, writing letters etc.

Essential requirements

  • Experienced in Elderly Care Home
  • Minimum NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care qualification or Nursing qualification
  • Competent to undertake senior duties
  • Able to effectively use a care management system using a tablet/phone
  • Good written and spoken English
  • Able lead by example in promoting total care, independence and dignity of our Patrons
  • Understand the CQC requirements and expectations
  • Have a minimum of 1 years’ experience working in a care setting
